Strategies - Why Link?
There are two basic aspects to Website Optimization for the major search engines: -
- the first is "on page" factors such as metatags, keyword density and keyword frequency etc.
- and the second is the "off page" factors, which essentially boils down to in bound links, i.e. links to your site from other sites.
Getting other sites to link back to yours is very imprtant to help boost your sites Page Rank and in turn to increase your sites position in the SERP's (Search Engine Result Pages). The more high PR (PageRank) pages that link to your site, the higher your sites PR will be.
The "Anchor Text" that you choose for webmasters to use when they link back to your site is also important. The Anchor Text is the text that appears in the HTML hot link. using "Click Here" will not be useful for your site's rank, on the otherhand using "Your Keyword" as the link text will help your site to rank higher for "your keyword"..
A classic example of this is the Adobe site, which is ranked no. 1 for the term "Click Here" simply because so many sites have a link to the adobe acrobat ("pdf" reader) software for downloading.

"Do's"
Have a seperate Links page.
Have a link to your links page from your home page.
Include the html code for the link that you want people to use on your links page so that it is easier for webmasters to link with you.
Do split you links pages in to seperate relevant categories.
Seek links from related websites.
Use one or more of your keywords or phrases in the link text.
Use a link management Site -> Reciprocal Linking Program
Linking
"Dont's"
Don't remove or "break" partners links after a while, most webmasters do monitor there backlinks using one of themany srcipts or software available to do so.
Link between your own sites on the same "C" Block IP address.
Don't have just one page with hundreds of links on it.
Don't expect people to link to you without linking back to them, although if you can get someone to do so, it has a far more beneficial effect.

One of the best ways to get lots of free backlinks to your site is to write and article and submit it to some of the free articles sites which will then allow webmasters to use that article on the site, as long as they leave your details (including a link to your site) in the article header and/or footer.
On the same basis you can write press releases and submit them to the many press sites and get the same result.
It is also possible to buy text links to your site from high PR sites. This can boost your sites PR, and therefore your rank, quite effectively. However, this can be expensive in the long run, so it is best to get a link when your site is new, and then start a links campaign, then later you can drop the paid text link once you have sufficient free link partners to achieve the PR and rank that you need.

One word of warning on purchasing Text Links, I would not recommend buying a "Site Wide" link, i.e. one where your link will appear on every page of the site in question, as it seems that Google are now penalising this as it appears "un-natural" to them...
